"Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee,
How Great Thou Art...."
Oh how my grandmother loved that song. I grew up learning church hymns at an early age, My grandmother played the piano and would sing, "Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed." I can still hear her harmonic voice, her beautifully gifted voice.
I learned to play the piano because of my gram. Just a few facts: my grandmother paid for my piano lessons when I was a kid. I never really advanced out of John Thompson, book 1 before I quit. I may have begun book 2 and dropped out, of course, it would have been against the advice of my mother.....and grandmother. I did learn to chord, and once I learned where middle C, D, E,F & G were, the rest of what I learned fell by the wayside. I think I was somewhere in middle school when I did drop out. You see, I had issues then and now retaining information....ask my wife.....or my therapist, plus, it didn't help that, like my grandmother, I have a natural ear for music and could usually finger out the tune on the piano. It might not be in the correct key, but I can often play a song.
These days, arthritic and all, just like my grandma, I can still finger the ivories, a saying my grandmother used. It's not quite as easy as it once was, especially with the natural regression of aging, crooked fingers and all, I'm not what I use to be, but I can still do it. So, I most often stick with what I know, and this is the full circle moment of this post, I still play those hymns I learned from my grandma, as well those many years in church during my informative years.
I am grateful I have such "Precious Memories,' yet another hymn, of my grandmother and the years we had with the other. For a man who is nearing 56, (shhhh, I'm still going to stick to 38) I am blessed to have a fully functioning mother who has all of her faculties, and have had a grandmother for the first 49 years of my life. #blessedforsure
